The Oskaloosa City Council is considering updates to the newest versions of its adopted building codes, as listed in the following table.
|Currently Adopted Code||Proposed Code Adoption|
|2015 International Residential Code||2021 International Residential Code|
|2015 International Building Code||2021 International Building Code|
|2015 International Existing Building Code||2021 International Existing Building Code|
|2015 Uniform Plumbing Code||2021 Uniform Plumbing Code|
|2015 International Mechanical Code||2021 International Mechanical Code|
|2015 International Fire Code||2021 International Fire Code|
The updates will retain local amendments, including a sprinkler exemption for one and two-family dwelling units and for townhouses with less than eight dwelling units and/or less than 18,000 square feet. The updates will align with State of Iowa adopted codes and most peer communities, and will enable the city to maintain its Class 4 Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS) rating. Coupled with permitting, proper training, and regular inspections, updated building codes enhance safety, incorporate the latest advancements in construction, and offer peace of mind to property owners.
A final discussion and vote is scheduled for the July 18th, 2022 City Council meeting. If adopted, any project permitted or under review as we transition to the newer codes will be allowed to follow prior standards, and staff will be available to assist applicants and answer questions. Any questions may be directed to Mike Flahive, Building Official, at City Hall or at 641-673-7472 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
