The updates will retain local amendments, including a sprinkler exemption for one and two-family dwelling units and for townhouses with less than eight dwelling units and/or less than 18,000 square feet. The updates will align with State of Iowa adopted codes and most peer communities, and will enable the city to maintain its Class 4 Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS) rating. Coupled with permitting, proper training, and regular inspections, updated building codes enhance safety, incorporate the latest advancements in construction, and offer peace of mind to property owners.
A final discussion and vote is scheduled for the July 18th, 2022 City Council meeting. If adopted, any project permitted or under review as we transition to the newer codes will be allowed to follow prior standards, and staff will be available to assist applicants and answer questions. Any questions may be directed to Mike Flahive, Building Official, at City Hall or at 641-673-7472 or mflahive@oskaloosaiowa.org.
