North 17th Street Bridge Replacement Project
Project Name:
North 17th Street Bridge Replacement Project
Project Location
North 17th Street from Carbonado Road to the Northeast Wastewater Treatment Plant
Project Description:
- The scope of this project includes the construction of a new bridge over a branch of Spring Creek and the re-alignment and replacement of the roadway approaches to that bridge.
- The Mahaska Community Recreation Trail may be incorporated into the new bridge as a shared use path.
Project Benefits:
The existing bridge on North 17th Street was built in 1930's and is in need of replacement. When it was inspected in 2015, it was given an estimated remaining life of 2 years, which means that failure of the bridge is imminent. In addition, the existing bridge opening is not adequate for flood events and may not withstand significant rainfall events. Currently, this bridge provides access to the Northeast Wastewater Treatment Plant and the multi-use recreational trail. This project will allow for the construction of a new bridge meeting the current flood stage design requirements. In addition, the Mahaska Community Recreation Trail will be incorporated into the new bridge as a shared use path.

Project Status
Project design and bidding are completed. The City is currently working towards executing the contract and determining the construction schedule. Calhoun-Burns & Associates (CB&A) was selected to conduct the preliminary design necessary to replace the existing bridge with a new bridge meeting current standards and Iowa Department of Natural Resources floodplain requirements. The existing bridge, with a stone gateway was constructed in the 1930's, is eligible for National Register of Historic Places (National Register), which requires the City to preserve the existing bridge and to build the proposed bridge west of the existing structure. This project has been significantly delayed since the City was notified by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) that the existing bridge is eligible for National Register and it is currently estimated that the construction of new bridge will begin in 2019. The preliminary design phase for this project has been approved by SHPO and a flood plain development permit has been approved by Iowa DNR. The total project cost, including engineering and construction, is estimated at $1,180,000 with 80% federal-aid funding participation from the Iowa DOT.
Estimated Project Cost:
City Portion (20%): $ 185,153.61
